Weirdly my "death wobble" has gone... or is hardly worth mentioning... yet i have a decent amount of play when i jack it up and wobble the front wheels (hands just off top and bottom). Could this be my rod ends?

My mum is going to drive it soon and see if she gets the wobble.

Ok Kinda Fixed!

Well after reading as much as i can on here and the Auzzie Forums. I rang up my suzuki dealer to grab some new king pin bearings, rear trailing arm bushes and shims. Of course everything apart from the shims were ex japan :( So i picked up 4 x 0.5mm shims on Saturday. The same part number that was in that Suzuki bulletin release.

I had my front hubs apart last week and the king pin bearings have been done semi recently as they look pretty new, new grease, and wipers etc. I have done around 20,000 kms since i have owned this jimny.

So with only 4x shims in hand i installed them. 2 on each side one top and one bottom. Took it for a 20min spin on the motor way and hey presto no more wobble!! Drove 100% Mint no shimmy or wobble at any speed. Although the steering did feel a little hard. Almost like there was too much pressure on the bearings. Just a little harder to turn when stationary and a little more firmer on the road. I have no kg puller tester thing to see what pressure was needed after these shims were installed. It didn’t feel too bad moving the wheels by hand when on the stands.

So back on the jack and i removed the lower shims. So now only have the 2 top shims in one on each side. Took if for another 20 min drive on the motor way and still pretty dam good. 100% better than with no shim at all. No major wobble and only the slightest shimmy on the steering wheel at around 80km/h but nothing serious or even bothering to me. I would say it feels like its 95% fixed. But my Bridgestone A/T tyres are pretty worn and need replacing and i do need an alignment as it slightly pulling to the left and my discs are slightly warped but only annoying under braking. I have booked it in for an alignment and tyre balance next Saturday and will try to track down some new discs this week for it. Im sure with these done it will be spot on and no need to shim the lower king pin. The steering felt normal with the 1 shim in each side, when stationary it turned nice and freely again and didn’t feel like there was any added resistance from the shims.

When i was at the my local Suzuki dealer i did ask them if they have dealt with this issue. His words were does it have standard wheels. Me – No. He was like get an alignment and then see what the specs are to factory. He said he has had a few come in and they have solved the issue by adding wheel spacers. Seems to think it is all down to camber. Once you put on different wheels then track is decreased / increased with different offsite width of tyres etc. This is one thing i have not read on any forums. Trying to space the wheels out to see if it affects the wobble. I would have tried it but have no spacers.

Anyhow will do an update next week once i have everything else done alignment discs etc and see what the go is.

But in the mean time im happy, for $7 worth of 2 shims – Its pretty nice to drive on the motorway again.
