Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal was created by srcars
I seam to have an intermittant oil leak from my clutch bell housing :( Bit miffed as the car only has just over 30,000 on the clock. It started suddenly and one day it dropped hardly any but the next quite a bit came out. I have looked in through the clutch lever arm cover and the clutch is not yet contaminated and I am guessing the rear crankshaft seal has gone ? I have done a search both here and google and there are a couple of references to it but anybody else had this or know what would have caused it (bearing gone somewhere ?) Mine is a SOHC and I have a manual which shows this

Will the rear bearing come out with the seal ?

Any help appreciated Thanks

Very rare these go. Are you absolutely sure the oil is not coming from beneath the head and running down?
Assuming it is the crank seal, first check that all the breather pipes are clear, including that rattly valve thing on the head, and that there isn't too much oil in before you do anything else.

It won't contaminate the clutch unless you have a massive leak, in the olden days we used to put drip trays underneath our Landrovers and pretty much anything made by british leyland to catch the oil that used to continually weep out of the jiggle pin fitted to the bell housing drain hole, never did any harm.

BL could never keep the oil inside their engines.

Fixing that seal is really an engine out., or gearbox out job, I'd get a drip tray ;)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Thanks for the ideas. Checked all the breathers ect and all Ok and had an inspection mirror behind the engine but its deffinatley not coming from the rocker or the head. I undid the metal plate which covers the lower part of the bellhousing and there is some oil in there but it seems to have slowed right down so going to keep an eye on it. I chucked a can of stop leak in the other day so maybe thats helped :silly:
