Hi Everyone,

I have just been giving my Jimny a good clean to try and get
about 3000ton of grit salt off (Wonder if the local council
want's to buy it!!)When i noticed some grease on the inner side
of my front N/S wheelrim.

Is this the infamous crap seal's on the axle letting go??
I didn't have a really good look but the only place i can
imagine it could come from is the swivel.

It also smell's strongly i think of diff oil.

Any help much appreciated

Edit: Martin do you not have any King Pin bearing kit's at the moment
the shop say's not?????

Its bad news I am afraid.

The seals on a Jimny are good, I have never heard of a problem with "crap" seals and I have never changed a swivel seal despite working a lot on the front end of my car.

In a Jimny the Swivel Joints are "dry" and the swivel seal is to keep fluids out, not in, so if you have diff oil leaking from the swivel there is something wrong.

What normally happens is that either the Wheel Bearing or Kingpin Bearings have gone. This permits the hub to move around and moves the driveshaft within the axle, this movement of the driveshaft causes oil to leak into the swivel from the diff.

You need to establish whether its the wheel bearing of kingpins.

I would jack up the car and wiggle the wheel on the leaking side by gripping the tyre with both hands and trying to rock it. If the wear is bad then you will feel play in the wheel. If an assistant then presses the brakes and the play disappears it should be the wheel bearing, if the play is still there then its the Kingpin bearings. (Both are, of course, available from my favourite web shop although Kingpin bearings are "in the post" to me at the moment- I do have a personal set if you are desperate).

i'v got the same prob with mine. it was the kingpins that had gone and that big seal that keeps the grease in. when i took it all apart dif oil started dripping out of it, i just stuffed more grease in did the seal and kingpins put it all back together and it was o.k for about 4month naw its done same again but i did use crappy kingpins from scrapyard cos i needed them on the day and it was a sunday.

going to sort mine again when the weather gets better...

I will have a check tomorrow and see what is wrong!!
Can't see me getting around to sorting it until the end of the
month i dont have any event's for a while and (i'm hoping here)
if it's the kingpin's i think there is enough life until then.

my money's on the lower kingpin bearing shot. both mine went and my mates had the same. not too difficult a job. martins bearing kits will sort you out once you know

Had a look today a good bit of play top-bottom
and still there when brakes applied!!!

Look's like i'm doing my kingpin's soon for the first time
should be an experiance!!

I am hoping to do it the last week in Jan hopefully you hould have
some stock by then, If not, can i pinch your spare??

Just one more question, do i need to take off the 4 pinned
nut
on the bearing as i don't have the tool, or does the hub slide
off with the bearing still in place??

jamie, you can take the complete hub off, makes it super easy to change the kinpins

when i did mine a rang dealer 1st and they said i had to get a new hub bolt if i took hub off and they was 40quid so i did it without just cut the seal put it round the hub the supa glue back together. that worked.... how easy is it to take hub off
