You should be able to get a replacement engine supplied and fitted for about £1500, and £60 will sort the kingpin bearings. A 5 year old Jimny is worth twice that.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

The number of people who have changed the axel because of Kingpin and Kingpin Bearing problems. Just change the kingpin bearings on the other side (and Kingpins if really necessary - but I would doubt it). You probably ought to check its not the wheel bearings as well. If you do all the Kingpin Bearings and Wheel Bearings yourself you would have change from £140 for the full axle or £70 for one end. There is no way that, even if the mechanic did it, that this would be more than the car is worth!

When you say "shes eating oil" do you mean the engine oil or axle oil? If its engine oil then there is only three places it can go:
1. Out of the exhaust - you will see lots of blue smoke out the back if this is the case.
2. On the road - pools of oil will appear under your car when you stop.
3. Into the water - take a look in the radiator for "cream".

Once you work out where its going then we can move onto "why".
