Any body ever changed the exhaust manifold gasket? Is it an easy job? Think mines on the way out and just wondered if it was possible without resorting to taking it in. Its just starting showing signs of soot deposits up the side of the block, so its the next job on the list i think.

Its fairly straight fwd, What engine is it, Mine is the G13BB, not the M13A, But it took less than 15mins to get at it. Whilst i was removing the head for a head Gasket problem.
there are 9 bolts actually holding it to the head, but There's a heat shield on top of that with 4 i think.
I snapped a few of the heat shield bolts-or studs, but not replaced them yet.
Mine are all 8mm studs but with the jap style 12mm socket/spanner nuts as opposed to 13mm on british 8mm or m8 nuts.

They are probably going to be rusted or corroded but give them a squirt of a release agent like wd40 or i use something called plusgas you may be lucky and not have any hassle.
The manifold will come away easily once undone from head- but be carefull of the lambda sensor its a few inches down, and the lead prevents it from going to far away, But you should have enough room to move of the head and get at the old gasket- , remove it, clean both surfaces and replace for a new one.
i've got a pic of the manifold on the side as i was taking the head off.
the heat shield has already been taken off,
gasket is only a few quid mine is the all metal type and is multi layered here is one g13bb exhaust gasket
Hope this helps !!, i should imagine the M13a engine will be similar if yours is one !!

Mines a 52 plate - im guessing its the G13BB. Ive already had the heat shield off, that wasnt difficult and the bolts werent too rusty even without a squirt of WD. When putting back together do the main bolts need to be torqued up, is so, to what torque?

The G13BB manifold to engine is 23nm or just under 17 lb/ft

Not sure about the M13A, but i guess their going to be similar ?

Mine has the back cover over the spark plus with DOHC on the top - guessing thats the twin cam then? Engineer mate reckons it might be easier to warm the bolts up before i attempt to take the manifold off as they'll like to shear off if its done cold - any suggestions?
