Another Quick Question (I Hope!) was created by DAM0
2000 1.3 JlX Manual Transmission
Driving along at 30MPH in 3rd Gear and occasionally the car will "judder" for a few seconds and the rev counter goes mad then all back to normal. Tonight it happened twice on a 5 mile journey.
Any ideas??
Cheers

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

As it is affecting the rev counter I would look at the cam sensor or crank sensor.

I think you are referring to the speedometer sensor on the transfer box, which would make the speedometer freak out but would not cause the car to judder.
Someone else reported a fault just like this a few months ago and got to the bottom of it with a new sensor of some kind.
Might be worth a trawl through the old posts. I can't remember who it was now unless they announce themselves!
If you can get it put on a diagnostic machine by someone whoknows how to read them cheaply, they might be able to confirm what's causing it.
If they charge too much, some sensors are only £35 a piece and it might be as cheap to start playing trial and error in replacing them if they are charging £100.00 plus for a diagnostic session.
I've got the little box Martin has got that acts as a gauge and trouble code reader and very good it is too - so I can do my own diagnostics. It only cost £100.00 and I have used it already and use the guage part every time I drive it.
I can keep an active eye on the engine temperature for example and although the analogue guage has not risen at full temperature, I have learnt that the engine is running 10 degrees C higher due to mud in the rad, so I can deal with that now before it causes a problem.
If you have the twin cam engine, you might find it a good investment.
