Engine oil change was created by robp
I have an oil leak that appears to be coming from between the engine block and the sump cover. I have tried to get a new gasket only to be told they don't do one and sealing compound is used instead. The other issue is the amount of room underneath to be able to remove the sump cover so that i can clean it ready to seal.
Does anyone have any advice as in my mind this should be a simple job, but the doubts are setting in.
Cheers.

hi there mate i have a very similar problem. i thought it was the sump aswell so i took it off cleaned it up and re - sealed it, but still have the leak. i now reckon its the seal between the engine and the gear box which is going to be a trip to my mates garage i think.
to remove the sump there about 12 x 10mm bolts around it then you need to remove a small plate at the back to get to the last two then it will prize off.
hope this helps

Thanks James
I think it is the sump sael as it is at the front of the engine, either way I'll do it at the same time as the oil change. My Jimny is standard, so once the bolts are out will the sump pan come out or is it hindered by anything?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

TBH, sump gaskets very rarely leak. More likely it is coming from behind the front pulley.
The oil pump lives at the front of the crankshaft too.
The sump also rusts very badly and can become porous above the axle.

Please help!!!
After looking at my oil leak a little further, I would have to agree that it is going to be the front crankshaft oil seal as indicated by someone in another thread.
Spoke to a Suzuki service centre in Manchester and they said the new seal was £9 and its an hour to do at £56+vat. Not too bad I thought.
When I got home I requested the same quote from Suzuki in Worthing and wait for it...........took 2 days for someone to get back to me and.....................£420!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was told it was a 2.9 hour job and they had to put a new cam belt on (at the cost of £100!!) plus vat.
Is this something that you would do at home? I'm not wanting to shell out £420 for the sake of a couple of spots of oil.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Rule #1: if it ain't broke- don't fix it! for a couple of drips I wouldn't bother.
Rule #2: don't mess! If you start the job you will likely find that it needs either a new crankshaft (very very very very very expensive) or one of those thin shim metal tubes fitted because the leak is caused by a wear groove at the crank nose. Then you might as well change the cambelt as it has to come off first, so you will need a new tensioner as well. Then you will notice how worn the fanbelt is and fit a new one, and that rough noisy power steering belt tensioner? they are only £160 inc VAT...........
It might even be a worn oil pump, so the oil pump will want to come out for checking
(Oh yes, it is perfectly do able at home if you have a decent tool kit)
