Hi there, I think I'm on the verge of being bitten by the Jimny bug. I've been looking at replacing and changing my fun wheels; a Mazda MX5, which has been an excellent companion for the last ten years but is now no longer practical for year-round use despite my best efforts to keep it as such. I'm looking at something a little more practical but also something that can take me and the missus anywhere, has character, and above all else makes us smile because its fun.
I think the Jimny fits perfectly.
So I'm on the lookout for the right vehicle. I've not decided on my budget yet but due to an unexpected and idiot toerag using my MX5 as a crash barrier I've suddenly needed to hasten my search. It might sound daft but the only thing that's helping me narrow my search at the moment is that I can't buy anything that's red.
Use of the Jimny will be for everything I can throw at or in it. I don't want to go crazy with modifying but will be wanting to do some tasteful tinkering and find a nice balance between its wolf and sheep clothed nature.
I think I've chosen the worst possible time to embark on my search as it seems everyone else in Scotland is having the same idea.
Enough rambling. Hello!

Yeah I love my jimny, use it to its strengths and it will amaze you. Its been into the wilds of northumberland when the snow was at its worst and performed admirably....and to think i nearly bought another Land Rover!

welcome along!
I was torn between an MX-5 and a jimny as a second car (yes I know they aren't really comparable) but obviously I went for the Jimny.
So far its a lot of fun! Easy to tinker with, a giggle to drive (but don't expect to go anywhere very fast) and so far unstopable!
I went for a soft top to add a bit more fun in summer which I am looking forward to, but in the mean time is a bit more noisy and a bit prone to misting up inside on wet days!
Was it a hard top or soft you had in mind?

Hi & Welcome to the forum.
I too sold my mx5 just over a year ago, had it for 9 years but never had the roof down except for a couple of jollies in France with it. Middle age spread and balding don't look good with the roof down. LoL!
I bought a Merc and a Suzuki Carry van but have now replaced the van with my JIm, just on with doing a little modding to it.
Enjoy the forum and when you get a Jimny, lets see some pictures.

To be honest, unless your going extreme, a standard Jimny with a quality set of all terrain tyres will get you pretty much anywhere unless yoru going serious offroad.
If you have water to cross, then even in standard form, you can drive though water up to the bottom of the headlights with ease.... any deeper and I would considder a snorkel.
oh, and axel breaters.
That is pretty much all you need to do to make a Jimny a very capable vehicle indeed.
Personal preference on the soft versus hardtop models, but a hard top is more practical. If you want to make it a little muscular, get some 30mm spacers on the standard steel wheels or get wider alloys.

Hardtop is what I'm after. Softies are definitely more widely available, and cheaper, at the moment but I'm after the security and convenience of an enclosed roof and rear space again.
Not sure I'll do much modification on the body but I've already got my eye on on wheels, tyres and bits of light chassis tinkering and servicing to fit around them. The usual, I suppose.
And yes, pics are a certainty.

Hi, Im from fife too - Kirkcaldy. I bought my Jimny first week of december to replace my sick BMW that needed £1000+ of maintenance to it. Its absolutely brilliant in the snow i have to say, especially with the Malatesta Kaimen tyres i bought!
Have you looked at any of the garages in KIrkcaldy? I got mines from Brenwood motors (Suzuki garage near Asda) but there was a lot of them floating around when i was on the hunt. I'll keep my eyes peeled and let you know if i see any in the passing - I work just outside Carnoustie and cross the bridge everyday and such - pass about 8 garages between home and work!

Cool, cheers! I was thinking of nipping down to Brenwoods at the weekend and having a nose about. I'm still not settled on budget. I'm tempted to aim cheaper so I've got the money for basic mods, but equally I need to be driving it every day so it can't spend too long in the garage with me taking it apart.
I'm based in Newport on Tay and work in Dundee so we're probably crossing paths most of the time.

Well I'm a bit stuck. Been speaking to a few people in the used trade and Suzuki dealerships in the vacinity today and they're basically laughing. Very few Jimnys have been surfacing and those that have are fetching an extra grand premium because of demand. To buy new there are 6-8 week delivery times.
I have to remain patient but it complicates matters as I've got to do something about the MX5. Bloomin snow!.
