Little unbraked trailer.

North Yorkshire Council bless them have issued an edict to the effect that to use the household waste recycling tip one cannot have a trailer over 1.5m bed length.  All mine are over this.  This is mostly because I haven't used little trailers because of the unbraked tow limits for a jimny and because things like the edre 102 and 122 strike me as being a bit top heavy looking and bouncy even with stuff in them. However this is only an assumption on my part. So those who have one or something equally small what do they tow like? Are they more stable than they look? Would you recommend one brand over another or is something more second hand and wooden sided a better idea?  Ideally I would like one that could fit a big materials bag in it though obviously not full of sand more for garden and tree brash.

I have a homebuilt I bought for the Jimny and refurbed.
Is fully enclosed and the bed is approx, 1200x1200.

Axle is located well to the rear (almost like they cut the ass off a regular trailer) which makes it track REALLY well (no chance of speed wobbles - not something you'd want in a lightweight car like a Jimny).

Draw bar is incredibly short (more like a quad-bike trailer) which makes backing it interesting if you are not used to it but means you can turn it on a dime (backwards or forwards).

I like the short compact design - suits the whole ethos of the Jimny but have plans for a re-build for some improvements (racks and extendable drawbar) to allow me to carry longer/sheet material on top of it.

My Jimny had no problem towing it even uphill - and that was back when it was stock 1300 before I did the m18a swap.

Strange way to encourage people to get their waste to the dump instead of dumping in the wild. (In your pastures Lambert?)
Where i camped in the high plains last week in an abandoned gravel pit from the 50 or 60s someone had dumped their old chimney in a corner. Out of sight out of mind. And here it is not expensive to dump stuff, just +/- 10€ for 100kg depending on what it is. But some people..

My SJ half a car trailer tracks beautifully. weighs about 400kg loaded. Has a lot of tongue weight from the box on the draw bar, so runs a 100kmh easily on highway. wich is not allowed of course, max 80. On loose gravel though it starts to float at around 60-70kmh making it a bit too exciting.

We get tourists from Holland pulling tiny trailers. Must be simpler and cheaper to maintain and register as the license plate on them is the same as the car.

As long as the tongue weight is good it will work well with any size trailer I guess. have never had any problems with too small a trailer. most brands (here) use more or less the same german axles and hardware.
I would stay off trailers with too small wheels though, 14" inch at least I think is good.

It's not flash, was in a very rough state when I bought it.
Guy I bought it off was using it to truck around all his fishing gear - Kontiki long-lines etc.

Had used larger hire trailers (standard not over-size) and found them too heavy for the Jimny over any distance.

Short drawbar takes some getting used to for backing (easy to jack-knife).
Jockie wheel handy for hitching it up to the car espcially if there's a bit of weight in there due to the axle positioned rear, can wind the hitch down onto the towbar and then it detaches out of the way.
Tracks really well, doesn't bounce when empty.

Would like to scratch rebuild it sometime soon - have a lot of ideas for improvements.

 
 

Yeah I've looked before at scratch build but the government's quite keen that a private person doesn't do that. But equally you can restore a trailer if it suits you and from what I can determine they have a very wide window of what is a restoration, I'm not saying you could restore a trailer around a jockey wheel or nose stand but it's not far off, though there's enough like that out there so I suspect it's just a matter of time before trailers need registration documents and yearly testing. I'm not really wanting to do that particularly though, I'd rather just buy one and use it hence mentioning the little flat packed ones like the erde.

I ran a Streetwise (like erde). Made a couple of mods for camping, but the standard 12" wheels were fine for road use.
