Does anyone have any recommendations for front and rear diff guards on a gen 4 auto?

Personally, I wouldn't bother. They add weight, they reduce ground clearance, they can get plastered in mud and that can promote rusting and they cost!. The casing material on a Jimny is perfectly strong enough to ward of minor thumps find on off-road excursions. (Or on road for that matter).

The only protection I have on mine is a skid plate under the transfer box (It was all an MB had in the 1940s...), on the grounds that the transfer looks vulnerable, and the chances of finding a used Gen 4 auto transfer box are very slim.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I have Jimnybits front and rear diff guards, although neither are really essential, unlike radius arm protectors and a tray over the transfer box.

I decided on a front diff protector in case I hit a rock in the middle of a rutted track and it is showing the signs of collision, but that is mostly from the quarry trials.

Whilst I was ordering, I thought I might as well get a rear guard, although I doubt it comes in to contact with anything.

As for reducing the ground clearance, yes they do, but only by about 10-15mm.

In my 13 years of owning Jimnys and being part of the Jimny community I can't think of a single instance of a differential being damaged from hitting something. It's probably the toughest part of the whole car.
