Good evening lads,
Firstly just want to say hello, ive made a new account with a more up to date email address on here, but to be clear im not new to our beloved Jimny scene ! ๐ฏ๐ต๐ฌ๐ง๐๏ธ
In short lads im in need and asking a favour from anyone whos had issues with battery lights on a Gen 3 Jimny, mine is 2003.
PLEASE can someone help me out ?!
Little while ago i had an alternator belt snap on me, immediately heard it go, engine turned off within seconds and due to being at home, i decided to not only replace the belts but also it was finally time to replace my knackered looked alternator.
With new belts and alternator fitted, it was back up and running in no time, but ! The battery lights come onโฆ and i can not work out for the LIFE of me whyโฆ
I have tested,ย
- battery voltage is 12.4 volts engine off, around 14.5 with engine running
- alternator also showing 14.4 ish volts when running.
- checked fuses
- have cleaned battery terminals
- battery is 1 year old and fully charged
The alternator on all face value and tests clearly
is working fine !
i have even connected the OBD2 reader which shows no faults on the Jimny.
Lastly, i have conducted a test with the engine running of disconnected the alternator whilst the engines running for a few seconds, and the battery light goes outโฆ but when i re connect the alternator the battery light comes back on ?!
it is driving me absolutely mad, and if there is any of you who is sat reading this smiling with a solution or suggestion, please lads im a desperate man ??
Ps- there is a paypal donation prize for a few beers awaiting any man who sends me the suggestion/solution that works ! Im a man of my word ! ๐บ
Please comment or send me a DM, thanks !
Mark.

My guess would be a faulty alternator or possibly the wrong alternator for your car.
Is the new alternator a direct replacement? Itโs not a so called โSmart alternatorโ is it?
Does the light go out when you rev the car? If it does the output of the new alternator might be weak.
Could you try your old alternator back on and see if you get the same problem?
You do get faulty alternators, a few years ago my other non-Jimny car had the battery light flicker on at low revs, which just got worse. The garage fitted a new alternator, but then said they werenโt happy with the new alternator, they took it out, took it back and exchanged it for another which after 2 days they were happy with. Fortunately for me they only charged for one change.

Your voltage says your alternator is just fine but your charge lamp does not sense it.
On link above a photo of the 3 pin connector. Only one important wire, the White red going to the charge warning lamp. Check connections on the plug.
Check if the ground is good, hook a jump start cable from your battery negative to your engine. the lift eye maybe or other metal.
Hope this helps.
