SJ Distributor mount leak

In changing the clutch some other minor issues came out the woodwork

We have the very common distributor mount oil ring leak. Our SJ is running really well. It looks to me like i could undo the mount without disturbing the distributor position and hence withut upsetting the timing. Does this sound feasible?

Undo the cap and note the position, then Undo the nut /bolts and as you described.
Easy peasy.

The larger Oring is the culprit most often. The smaller one stops Oil coming up into the disto I think, never changed it.

Remember the ground wire when putting it back together.

There are actually three 'seals', two are O-rings and third is a garter seal - the first (large O-ring) seals the distributor mount to the head, the second (small O-ring) seals the distributor body to the mount, the garter seal seals the spinning shaft in the distributor to the distributor body - the garter seal is the one that keeps the oil from coming up into the distributor.

In theory yes, in reality I have my doubts - I suspect you will have trouble unmeshing & remeshing the gears and no guarantee that the timing will be right at the end of the exercise.

I'd certainly give it a try, but I wouldn't bet on it.
