Hey guys my name is Carl and I just registered as a new member. I have a 98 auto trans 660cc jimny with about 30k miles that died on me after a short drive to the store. Upon inspection the ignition module was really hot so i let it cool down for 20 minutes. After cooling down the engine started but barely ran and sounded like the distributor was retarded a tooth or two so i towed it home. Sense then no start!
Im getting good injector pulse but very weak spark and no communication to the ecu with my snap on scanner. I changed the ignition module and coil but still weak spark and no start. The check engine light does illuminate with key on and all fuses are good. Compression and mechanical timing are good. I have not scanned this vehicle prior to this problem so I don’t know if the communication issue is related to the no start. I searched but have not been able locate a decent schematic for this vehicle.
Any suggestions?

There are a few reasons why the ignition module overheats:

- The ignition module has a fault and it is generating the heat itself. If this is the case it will shortly fail altogether.

- Is the ignition module close to the engine or in the engine bay and is the engine running hot or over-heating?

- Is the ignition module bolted to a metal surface to use as a heatsink? If it is then there will be some heat transfer paste between the module and the metal and if this has started to fail (or has been removed) then the module may over-heat.

Has it over-heated since you bought the car or is it a recent thing?

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that model did not use OBD2 protocol. OBD1 or maybe J-OBD -- may be worth a check to see if your scan tool is using the right "language."

The jimny had an intermittent Missfire a few days prior but smoothed out on a short drive. At the time I never checked the temp of the ign module and is mounted in its original stock location. Sense the no start I replaced the ign module and coil. The vehicle never did overheat on me.

Thanks I’ll definitely look more into that, it has a obd2 port so I assumed it would connect to obd2 direct
