Hey Everyone,

I recently bought a 1993 Jimny LTT/LTS. I love the car, but I'm noticing some issues that may arise once I ship it back to the States. Currently, it goes about 90-100 KPH, which is about 62 MPH, perfect for where I am. But back in the States, I plan on driving it daily and taking it on the freeways, which would need to go about 65-80 MPH without overheating or pushing the engine very hard for long periods. So far, I know it will need a slightly bigger turbo on top of regearing to get a higher top end and to adjust for the 31-inch tires it is on. Does anyone have suggestions on where I can source aftermarket parts for this model and any other recommendations where I can get the Jimny reliable and able to do this? Also, the motor is the 660cc 3cyl gasoline.

I have no experience of older Jimnys and as we don’t get the 650cc model here no experience with that engine either.

However, I wouldn’t think that a 650cc Jimny was suitable to cruise at 75-80mph even with a big turbo. My 2011 1,300cc would have struggled to do 80mph and certainly not for more than a few miles.

Add to that bigger wheels and tyres and your big turbo and I suspect you are going to have a very short lived Jimny.

You want to go 80mph, with 31" tires, every day, reliably... with a 30-year-old motor giving 40-odd horsepower? Or am I misunderstanding?

A slightly bigger turbo will at best give you a slightly bigger hp number. (And that 3-cyl will hate the additional heat load.) Regearing won't add more power, and if you gear that car for highway speeds then you'll have a 0-60 that you can measure with a calendar.

And with 31 inches of rubber, frankly I'm surprised it can get out of its own way. Not to mention that such extreme wheel mass is loading up the brakes (and steering, and bearings...) in a way they were not designed for.

I don't like to discourage enthusiasts, but you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Talk to an American kei specialist before you go any further with this project-- you'll be glad you did.

I had a SJ413 with a lift and cut out for 31. Had correct gearing, the 4,16 transfer.
With the 1,3 and 62hp I think 80mph was the top speed. 120kmh was the practical max and it cruised fine at about 100kmh.
Anymore I would think is not safe or smart.

Norway 2005 Jimny M16A VVT, 235 BFG MT, 2" Trailmaster, ARB rear lck, 17%/87% high/low gears.

Don't forget that an increasing top speed has a diminishing reduction in journey time once you get above nominally 60 mph. It also comes with a corresponding increase in risk to both you and others. I would really try and learn to accept a lower top speed.

Just my opinion but a 660cc Jimny is not suited for daily use on the US Interstate highway system, and on 31s, worse yet.

Driving below 60 is not really an option, even on roads with a posted 55 mph limit, everyone is going to be overtaking you, and there is a real danger of being rear-ended.
