Sad news this morning 3 people lost the lives whilst crossing a ford in Glaisdale, N Yorkshire.  The car was part of a group of around 10 4x4 and looks a bit like a Jimny, hope it’s no one we know.

Although I have read the reports of the recent tragedy this week, those articles above link to a January 2021 incident?

Yes now I look at them they are both dated Jan 2021, it looks like it might have been the same place.

Very sad. Reinforces my distrust of water crossings.

It’s on the BBC now, turns out it’s a Land Rover disco or similar.

I don't know, maybe I'm being naive, but shouldn't there be a sort of unwritten rule amongst off roaders that "if in doubt" have seat belts undone and windows open ? I know things can still clearly go wrong but surely with those precautions in place people would stand a better chance of getting out of a sinking vehicle ?
I don't know about this tragic accident and how exactly it happened so I'm not commenting on this directly at all and of course would like to pass on my deepest sympathies to the families of those involved.

There is this emergency tool like a small hammer with a knife integrated in the handle. Must be mounted in reach from the drivers seat and can smash windows and cut seat belts.

I doubt many of us would be calm and collected to use it hanging upside down in the seat belts while the car was filled with water..

The driveway to my childhood home was a 1/4 mile causeway, about 12ft wide with deep water filled ditches either side. Family policy was to take off our seatbelts as we turned off the road onto the driveway for this reason.

Freezing cold water, too.  Knocks the wind right out of you, makes your hands almost useless in seconds.

It is easy to underestimate just how quickly these things can happen.  I feel bad for these folks.
