Tow bar wiring on 2016 Jimny. was created by Mert1
Hi,
My wife has a 2016 Jimny, and we have an old small garden waste trailer. The lights on the trailer were playing up and when I examined the inside of the socket on the Jimny I found it was full of water and the whole thing was very corroded. The socket has 13 terminals. I have ordered a new 7 pin one ( the Jimny will only ever pull our small trailer and that has a 7 pin plug.)
I have read and watched lots of stuff about the wiring for a tow bar socket and have discovered that mine has different coloured wires. The Jimny was registered in Scotland and the tow bar was fitted from new. We are the second owners. My cable has 3 different white wires and in fact has 14 wires not 13. Because of the corrosion I was not able to see which wire was connected to which terminal so I will have to work it out with a multimeter.
Has anyone got any thoughts on this, does Scotland use different coloured wires?
Martin V.

It seems that not everyone who fits a towbar necessarily uses standard after market wiring and if it were a dealer it may be the Suzuki loom. When I did my last 2 I just started from basic principles and patched into the vehicle lights and everything was straightforward.

The 13 pin is a EU standard and might use different colours on the cables to the UK 7 pin. Google 13 pin trailer wiring, note which colour is used for each light, the do the same for the 7 pin and draw up a conversion table.
If the colours are different then as your trailer was fitted with a 13 pin plug, the colours should correspond to the 13 pin standard.
I can check tomorrow when my PC is on if you don’t find it before then.

Tow bar wiring for 7 and 13 pin seem to use the same colour. Note these might be different to those on the vehicle.

Thank you for your replies.
I have three white wires in my loom, which is correct for some 13 pin set ups. But how do I know which white wire is which? I know I can eventually work it out with my multimeter but I would have thought there would be an easier way.
Martin.
