Just a quick question with no reason behind it. But is the push-button transfer case controlled by the ECU or is it a completely separate system?

Initially there were two control modules for the transfer. The 4WD Controller and the Transfer Controller. In later year models, the functionality of both was built into a single Control Module.

I started out with nothing & still have most of it left

Completely separate system.
As zukebob said - there are two variants.
