I am very hard on my jimny and it goes on and on, it is a terminator.
I have a rusty roof rack attached to my roof bars, it has been on there for years and reliably carries furniture, pallets.. planks etc.

I have noticed that the mounts were looking a bit worse for wear, I thought the plastic covers were coming loose from age/UV damage

Today, while transporting a Kayak the front right mount fell apart... I was shocked to discover that they are metal bars in a plastic mount... As I investigated I discovered that all four plastic mounts were held together by the plastic covers... As soon as I pried them off they just fell apart !

I removed the busted bars and tied the rusty rack to the roof using straps... Worked better than the bars !

Time to get the welder out and make a proper rack with a front overhang.

My workhorse jimny lives on

It's fairly common knowledge that the Jimny roof bars are plastic and not up to much. The maximum roof load is only 30kg, so presumably Suzuki calculated that plastic was adequate for the job. At least with the bars removed you have some convenient fixing points.

hmmm, i was only at 19kg, but maybe they were all busted under the covers and the ratchet straps where the final straw...
as Busta says, i now have the perfect opportunity to make a solid rack
