Pickup conversions and traybacks can be done.
In fact, KAP suzuki make them commercially. www.kapsuzuki4x4.co.uk/suzuki/jimny.php

Like most of their kit an arm and a leg lol.

You'll probably need to email them your requirements, theres pic on the site showing what they've done.

Lots of people build traybacks/pickups but this is mainly for the tyre clearance and look rather than adding useful carrying capacity.

For lamping I'd buy a convertible Jimny or Vitara. They will do the job just as well as a pickup you could make. I understand your attachment to the vehicle but cutting up one good car to make it do the job of another car that already exists is silly.

I looked into building a Jimny pickup with a bed long enough to actually put stuff in. The trouble with the Jimny is the wheelbase is so short that a bed over 3ft long looks silly and short pickups are practically useless (e.g. Defender 90pickup- room for the spare wheel and that's about it). To get a 6ft bed on the back without a massive overhang you'd need to extend the chassis by 15 inches and that get's you into all sort of legal trouble with IVA tests and stuff so i decided to buy a 6x4 trailer instead!

Here's the scale drawing I did. The top one is with 31s and 4" lift, bottom on standard tyres and suspension.
