Im thinking about mounting my 33 x 11.5 spare wheel on a bits4vits modded wheel carrier. I know rear visibility will be greatly restricted but am primarily concerned about the weight, which is considerable. Any views much appreciated.
Can you get strengthened rear door hinges for a jimny or does anyone else think this a bad idea!

Have you got a high lift jack or at least the means for changing the wheel at the roadside of this monster?
if not i'd leave it off. Although that massive beadlocker would look awesome on the back
The strength of the door is not great IMO and I would think you would certainly strain the hinges.

The door feels quite sturdy. Mine is a soft top so it may be different though.
Why don't you carry a 'spacesaver' I.e. Same rolling diameter but lighter and narrower? It sounds crazy, but it's becoming more common as 4x4 tyres get bigger & harder to manage.
I run beadlocks and don't carry a spare.

just carry an inner tube, air compressor and a spanner or impact wrench
thats what the local guys do who've got beadlockers
else take the rear seats out and mount it flat in the boot and mount the hi-lift jack on the rear door

maybe a silly question but do you need a highlift jack when you have a 3"lift? i never thougt about it actually

ive got the same mount and a 31" what i notice is rough roads it flex's the back door so it sounds like something is loose in the boot, but its held its own tho and no creases etc

Your best bet is a swing out tire carier like AndyW's the back door will eventually split where it's been flexing with that much extra weight.

I agree with rockwatt in general - though I still think the soft top rear door is pretty solid.
I used to use a HiLift, but as suspension became longer travel, they became less & less useful. Id now have to carry a 5' HiLift to lift a wheel! Instead, I carry a Discovery telescopic hydraulic jack which lifts plenty high enough even running 37" tyres. Cheaper and lighter too.
Beadlocks do not mean you won't get punctures - but most of the flat tyres I've had have been due to the bead detaching and they fix that. I figure if I get a proper puncture, I can always call a yellow Taxi to get me home! However with deep tread and big tyres this is rare. I actually only bought 4 of the Fedimas - so carrying a spare is not an option.

if you mount a big tyre on the back door it digs in to the ground at the bottom of steep climbs
this then puts pressure on the rear door and the weld goes on the carrier or you develop a new set of dents or paint cracks in the door skin - ours has both
