What is the crack with the plastic wheel centres normally found just on the back? Is there a way to lock the hubs and leave them locked with just the placcy cover? That has to be a sure fire way to burn fuel like its gone out of fashion! Mods look to be recent

Was a cold day, but worth the drive... The Jimny is now covered in salt and needs a good washing this weekend!

That is a lovely motor and I'm interested in what tyres they are and what size, it appears they are on Vitara alloys.

You can have fixed front hubs, they came on many SJ's as standard as the freewheeling ones were an option, not a standard part back then.

IIt will have an effect on the fuel consumption yes, but it is not that noticable. I have run with my freewheeling hubs locked for many days when on laning holidays rather than keep messing about in and out of the car, and did not notice much.

Also, my old SJ410 came with fixed hubs and I can't say I noticed uch diffference when I added freewheeling hubs.

There must be more wear on the front diff and bearings but again, my old SJ410 did 89000 miles on fixed hubs before my ownership of it and had no slack in it and no bearing whine.

So it's not that bigger deal.

I also carry fixed hubs in the boot in case of a problem with the freewheeling ones whilst I am out laning.

One benefit of not having fixed hubs is that if you have a snapped shaft on the front or sometimes CV issues when the CV can still turn OK, you can stop transmitting motion to them by freewheeling the hub.

It looked massively high compared to mine, so i had a quick look under the arches and it looked asthough they were standard springs with orange inch or 2 inch spacers.

If i saw the tyre make again i'd recognise them, but can't remember it now :(

Fairly standard except the tyres, sus, and arch cutting

I never knew you could drive in 4wd on the road without any notice? my dealer once said you could only use it on loose surface or am I getting it wrong on the hub talk?

With grand vitara alloys its possible to fit the centre plastic cap over the top of the jimny auto hubs.
I have done in the past, and I will again soon once my GV is put back in the garage as my nice big shiny GV alloys will go on my jimny for road use.

the hubs are locked all the time, but there will be no drive to the front wheels whilst you are in 2wd so fine for the road, you would still only use 4wd on loose surfaces

all that it means is that when you are in 2wd the front halfshafts, diff and prop will be turning whereas with auto or manual lockers then only the front hubs turn as every thing else is disconnected
