will a roll cage make much difference to the price?
Some don't like rollcages. I know its external but the very thing its designed to do (protect the occupants) is the the reason it could slow down the emergency services in the event of a crash on the road. Also even though they're not so common now they used to be a target for ram raiders.
I know gary's comment was a bit tongue in cheek but i would tell them exactly the brand of any parts fitted. You may not get the full value of the vehicle in the event of a write off but it you haven't told them about something you may see as insignificant could make a difference come pay out time. How much would a full set of poly bushes set you back for the entire car.
When i worked for an insurance company they wanted loads of information and photos before taking on the policy. It can be a loat of work but sometimes it can make the difference in the long run, lets face it you only find out how good your company is if you have the misfortune of claiming.

Sorry if it sounded a bit sarcastic, but Id rather give a very detailed list of every modification I can think of at the time of taking out insurance. Down to the brand of poly bushes i've used as this can be a few hundred quid and they will use anything to avoid paying out in the event of a claim. Id rather be safe than sorry.
I upped my car insurance at the age of 17 when I told them I had fitted some aftermarket alloys. They upped the premium by more than the alloys cost new with tyres. None of my mates had told their insurance but the last thing id want is my insurance to be invalidated. Many things like towbars wont affect the premium but they will want to know.

Could it not be argued though that as it has switchable 4 wheel drive and a low four wheel drive that these vehicles are meant to go off road.

It was a nightmare insuring my GV as the insurance would not cover my partner with aftermarket wheels and wider tyres, but didn't mind me having these on, and have not minded me having these on in the past several years. I nearly did go get a standard set of wheels from a scrappy as these were sold on e'bay a long time ago. Now I wish id kept those 16" steel grand vitara wheels as these would have been perfect on my jimny with some big tyres.
Another thing that bugs me is some insurance companys advertise for green lane cover, I understand that all insurance must include this as green lanes are public highways.
