There are basically 4 petrol engines in Jimnys.
up to year 2001 - G13BB Single Over Head cam
2001 - 2005 - M13AA - Double Over Head Cam
2005 - 2009?? - M13AA Variable Valve Timing
2009 - updated M13AA VVT
So basically it changes based on the year.
HOWEVER....
The soft-tops were only made by Santana in Spain. They seem to have a stockpile of the older engines, therefore you will find soft-tops as late as 2004 with the older G13BB engine.

cheers matey. But does this mean that if engine from a soft-top is the same or similar to a hard-top it could be swapped with little problems

If you have the same engine in both then I cannot see why they cannot be swapped.
Its conceivable that there are some differences in the wiring loom, there was in the old SJ/Santana ranges, but they should be basically interchangeable.
