Spare key

Does anyone know how easy it is to get a spare key? I only got the one when I bought my car recently (year2006).

I rang Suzuki to get a key for my Grand Vitara a few years ago. I think i would have cost about £60 or £70. :ohmy: . I may be a bit cheaper for a jimny, but iam fairly certain you will have to go to Suzuki direct.

go down to your local cobbler / key cutter - they can cut and copy the code - £20 ish

I was given a price in a local key cutter of 120 € need to look for others but it is no looking easy

I went to our local key cutter today and he said as there is a chip inside it he can do it for £90.00 but if I went direct to Suzuki it would be around £120.00. Jings!
He also said if I happened to lose my one and only key then it could be £1500.00 to have all the locks replaced. Not sure whether to believe all that.

Due to frankly unbelievable incompetance, suzuki (and Honda) seem unable to keep records of the original transponder key codes, so they won't just order a key from your VIN number (makes things more secure sir) and they apparently need one working key to be able to program the security module to accept another (makes things more secure sir) so if you lose all the keys, you need a new security module.

It is so very difficult to plug a simple lead into the diagnostic port and press a button on a pocket pc to add a new key that they have no choice but to charge a full hours labour (makes things more secure sir)


Always, always get both keys with a second hand car. I would expect to pay £1000 less if there is only one.
What happens if it is stolen, when your insurance company want both sets of keys before they will pay out?

I've programmed my immobiliser many many times and have posted the procedure on here before. It only takes about 5 mins and doesn't require an original immobiliser. This is for the 2000 Jimny anyway.

According to the manual, you need the suzuki scan tool to program the immobiliser to accept a different key. You shouldn't need a working key though, so that bit of information is wrong. (1 hours labour + replacement key) however you either need to transport the car to a dealer, or get someone with a scantool to come round. They should also remove the code for the missing key in case a potential thief has your missing key.
The key bar will clone your original key so they both have the same code,which is o.k.

I stand by what I said, a car with one key is worth a great deal less money than one with two.

I think you are programming the alarm/central locking transponder when the battery goes, the key has a chip that doesn't need a battery.
