When I was a rep' (too many years ago to reveal) all cars had metal retracting aerials, which invariably got snapped off in the car wash. You don't see too many these days. It was a common sight to see cars going around with a metal coat hanger stuck into the old aerial.
It works well but not very pretty. Also snotty scumbags didn't bother to snap them off!
