We used to allow about half an inch showing, anymore than that or any tread showing, I'm afraid it meant a summons if you didn't 'fix' it within a week.
Why not nip into a MOT station and ask them?

Keefe wrote: If I remember correctly, only the sidewall can stick out from the arches, none of the tread pattern should show outside the arches, if you get my drift.
This is what I understood, its why the VW boys have "stretch" look to get wider wheels on but keep the tread under the arches...

HOWEVER... there is a think called "The construction and useage act" which states that Mr Plod can nick you for not having them 100% covered... They class it as moving parts accessable to the public.
I can personally verify this is correct, I have read the MOT law, checked with several MOT inspectors... and been knicked by the Mr Plod for having wheels sticking out...
Any MOT man who says they need to be covered for the "MOT" ask him to show you in the book where it states that... it's no in there...

They don't know what they are doing themselfs. Enforcement make up the law to suit themself's. I can show evidence of this, where they tow a trailer (2000kgs total) carrying a mobile commercial brake tester with a Renault Master plated to tow about 1500kgs. The spec of the Master was gvw 3500 and gtw 5000, which gives a trailer weight of 1500kgs. I work that out as OVERLOADED.
VOSA are 5cum.
