I've not had much to do with the vacuum operated ones so I'm not really the best person to tell you how to get them working properly if it is them.
I have some on the shelf in the garage so will have a look at them to remind myself what they look like.
I binned mine at the earliest opportunity and replaced them with fixed hubs and later manual freewheeling ones as they just work - rather than the will they, won't they affair with the vacuum ones. My vacuum ones did not want to work my first time out greenlaning in the Jimny and it was a pain in the backside.
I'll get back to you if no-one else with more knowledge on the vacuum ones comes along to help you with their knowledge.

I would take it off, see if the centre part that slides in and out with the vacuum is seized and if it has witness marks from being caught - making the noise - free it up if it has with WD40 and tapping it lightly, and then work it so that it runs along the splines in and out till free and LIGHTLY grease it.
Make sure you don't damage the rubber seal that goes around the outside of the housing as this makes it air tight for the vacuum to work.
If there are no witness marks from it catching this is not causing the noise.
The only other thing I can think of is something seizing.
Have you had it up on a jack and spun the wheels to listen to where it might be coming from?

had a look at the hubs may use your example and fit manual ones are these vacume ones a pain then.the hubs appear to be stuck in 4wd position though i cannot see any marks to suggest a problem.i have freed them up as martin suggested but one question i have is if they were stuck in 4wd why would they make a noise when 4wd is engaged.
Its not a broken CV joint is it, the screeching being the inner rotating inside the outer?

dont think its a cv joint no noise when both hubs removed,i will inspect the hubs tomorow ive got to do the bloody washing up now,women just do not understand.
Thats what made me think CV. If there is no noise when the hubs are removed then this is because the front shafts are no longer rotating. so you have to think what has stopped turning when you do this...
