Martin I'm not familiar with these forums but I do own/run a large forum that uses vbulletin. To prevent the spammers I created a Q and A that has to be completed at sign up. The question is: What's the 5th letter of colour. Members have to type in the correct letter to get through registration etc.
It has reduced automated spam by 90% +
Perhaps you could do the same? Most spammers are web bots, ie not real people. I also added an IP block by country via htaccess and whilst it isn't ideal you can use it to block the troublesome countries. IE China etc (no disrespect to Chinese members).
The spammers bypass the system. By calling the modules with the correct parameters the spambots get through the system.
The spam trap software works after messages have been posted and currently traps up to 100 posts a day, only a few get through. The bad news is that this activity is hitting the database.
