Yeah I can see what your saying but what did the mechanic do wrong he tried to pull the dip stick out and it snapped in his hand probably because it was seized. If he had been doing a wheel bearing and had broken an abs sensor then yeah its his fault and he'd have to replace it at his cost.
How many jimnys owners are there on this forum with a broken dip stick I'm one but its not a problem I just pop it up with a screw driver so I can get hold of it.

I had my kingpins done a couple of months back by a 'mobile mechanic'. He made a right mess of things and snapped one of the bolts holding the brake calliper in place. He told me I had to get a new one, I told him he wasn't getting paid He's never worked on a vehicle of mine since.

So what if your old dealing with some moles on a farm and you open the farmers knackerd old gate that's about to fall apart and it breaks would you buy him a new gate?
That's not really a fair comparison as I wouldn't be opening a gate that was about to fall to bits however, should I damage anything, as old and knackered as it may be, I would always make an offer of compensation. Whether that be repairing it, replacing it, or returning it to the condition it was prior to me damaging it.
