Tyres - again! was created by Barry
Sorry, I know this may have been done to death...
Buying an auto Jimny (2013), and I really can't make up my mind. Do I go for:
215/75r15 with 30mm spacers and 2" lift
or
235/75 (no spacers) 2" lift
I'd rather not cut anything about, but will if I have to. But I do want it to look 'right'. All comments most welcome.

You say you want it to look right, so you will probably not like me saying that the narrower the tyre on a Jimny the better they work in the typical off road conditions we have in the UK. Also spacers are not good for wheel bearing longevity.

Hi Barry,
As far as I know you will need to change the gear ratio in the transfer box in order to have enough torque/power for those tyres. Personally I would go for 195/80R15 with 2" lift (I have now) as it does not affect the performance so seriously as those 235/75 tyres would. I know also the golden rule says if you go up you must go wider but it would put more force on the kingpin bearings so I rather drive more carefully than before (I have no spacers). Others may disagree so keep asking!
(sorry for my crap grammar )

215/75/15 fine on standard gearing, it is the max though in my opinion.

Everyone's look is different, but 215/75r15 with no lift and no spacers looks right to me Spacers look chavy and the lift is unnecessary.

215/75/15 & 2" lift work well. You don't want to go too big or you'll overheat your automatic transmission fluid in no time on hills etc. A bigger cooler for it might be useful.
Rhino Ray has experience with Auto Jimnys. Give him a call.

I got 235/75-15 with 2" lift.
no cutting and only insignificant rubbing (in my opinion) but my car do not have the original mud flaps.
Power loss with those tires is however significant. Gearing as well. It is all show show and less go.
For my own offroading i like to float on top with very low tire pressure and very low rev on the engine, instead of digging down to get traction so i prefer to go wide.
M16a engine swap corrected most of the power loss and the low end torque gained from 1.6 engine also helped a lot with the gearing as i do not have to use so much rpm to get it going offroad. But i will change the low range gearing in the transfer box some day.
For any serious offroading with 235 you would however need to do something to the gearing even though you have an auto gearbox.
With the 215 tires most problems with the gearing and power loss is not very noticeable and you could spend the money on a diff lock instead of a lift.

A new tyre will be around 700mm-705mm
A retread/remould could be around 10 - 20mm taller
will depend on tread pattern AT or MT
