Replacement gearbox was created by mortonad1532
Hi everyone,
I have a sad tale. The rear bearing on the main shaft of my gearbox failed after 120k miles and caused a lot of damage to some of the gears. The guys I got to look at it say they can't repair it economically - apparently the replacement parts from Suzuki were prohibitively expensive and they tried in vain to source them elsewhere. So it looks like the gearbox is scrap. I did get a good used gearbox from Overtons in Aberdeen but it proved to be the wrong model.
My old gearbox has a barcode label on the casing giving the number 7A06222R72019J. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might get a compatible used gearbox with some kind of warranty e.g. 2 or 3 months ?
Any suggestions very welcome.
Alastair Morton

What year of jimny is it and is it hardtop or soft-top? Does it have a VVT engine? Does it have a manual (stick) transfer box or buttons on the dash?

These affect what gearbox it has. The more common one to fail is the R72 gearbox fitted to 2005 onwards vvt jimnys with push-button transfer box.

Theres a guy at Hamilton near Edinburgh that breaks jimnys. Try 07831299542. I know him from ebay as 'big-tot', but i cant remember his actual name. He had loads of spares from all years last time i wanted something north of the border!

Many thanks Riccy. big-tot sounds worth a try. My Jimny is 57 Reg manual hardtop with push button tfr box - not sure but I think so, will check that out - so a prime candidate for failure by the sound of it. Having said that it had a persistent leak from the front gearbox oil seal which I neglected to get fixed so it's all probably my fault really.
Many thanks again, I'll give big tot a call.
Cheers, Alastair

The leak of oil might be the intermediate prop. they are also a common fail im afraid. some have repaired them with resin glue of some sort i think. i tried superglue, which didnt work.

Hi Alastair, This is exactly the same story with mine.
R72 gear box, 2007 model, leaking prop, bearing failure at 90k.
I swapped the leaky prop which was an easy fix but a few thousand miles later 3rd gear was whining so had the bearings replaced. you can get the bearings and seals rebuild kit for about £100 and if you can get the components you need as well from a breaker you could have it rebuilt easily. I had the clutch done at the same time.

I wouldn't blame yourself for not getting the leaky prop done, the amount of oil it flicked under neath on to the cat and Transfer box was minuscule. I would check the oil levels regularly and it never went down it just looked like a lot more oil than it was splattered underneath. I think the bearings are just prone to wearing prematurely in the later boxes.

Best of luck.
