Looks like we've narrowed it down anyway.
Many thanks guys for your help.

I have seen one VVT as a late 2004 which was probably a dealer demonstrator and I have seen G13Bs as late as 2005 in the soft-top version which would have been stock from a compound somewhere

Only had the last 3 Saturdays on it for 3 hours at a time, so taking a while.
Got the engine out last weekend, which took longer than I thought as had to take the entire wiring loom off the engine to remove it. The most difficult part was getting to the starter motor, never seen anything like it! In the end I just took the air intake manifold and throttle body off to get to the solenoid and connector, getting the new engine back in I'm going to have to the same regarding the manifold. Which I'd rather not do, If anyone has any tips, it would be appreciated.
Thought it would be an easier job, but getting there.

I found it was easiest to remove both manifolds to get the engine loose from the gearbox. and all parts under the intake manifold is a pain to reach so i think you save time if you remove the manifold. Tried to put the new engine in with the intake manifold in place, but hoisted the engine out again and removed everything as you say.
Also bolts between gearbox and engine can be very tight. On my car one of the bolts where almost seized because it was too long. It did not have enough threads so the neck of the bolt with the part of the bolts without threads had gone into the threads of the gearbox and almost seized. It took a lot of persuading to get it out. You can see on the bolt on the part where the thread ends if there is scuff marks.

Good progress this weekend. New engine back in with gear box as one. I managed to hold the engine about 10 inches off the mounts and plug the starter and everything else back in without taking the manifold off, then lowered it. Was a pain, but got there. Had to take the rocker cover off to fit it back in, so loads of little jobs stacked up along the way.
All that's left to do now is fit a new radiator, fiddle about putting the gear stick back in and a few hoses, battery and fluids. Ran out of time this week, so hopefully the jeep will be running in a week or so.
Reason for swap was head gasket blow out and major overheat. Saved my self some money doing it this way I think there's no way of knowing the extent of the damage and I have a full workshop with pit on our farm.
The engine I bought came with a brand new clutch and alternator fitted = bonus.
Will be adding some off road mods when it's done. Will share some photo's.

Only problem, it idles high after a few minutes, but i think it's some vacuum hoses the wrong way around on the evap box perhaps? Can't find a digram for this anywhere.
EML light is on and can't get my obd reader to connect. Light goes straight to red on the device.
Aside from this, the only issue is the sloppy gear leaver, does anyone know of a digram of how these go back on and can I get a single bush that's possibly missing? I know this is a common problem.
Next job is to get it to the garage for an MOT.
