turning of a jimny with 4x4 engaged was created by tpidde
So i have the regular 4x4 temperamentalness that i now know to be a common issue. I suspect is just vacuum issues but before i start under the hood I would love a few things confirmed

(Im new to the Jimnys and 4x4s in general although family do have a 80's series Landcruiser, i'm coming from a classic mini background...)

So First question: my 4x4 only engages on flat ground, out of gear, with the wheels facing forwards (this has to be exactly forwards). Is this normal?

And second sometimes i park in places where i need the 4x4 to be on when i start is so i leave it in 4x4 when i turn it off because there is no garentee it will work when i start it (see above), but when i start it again i just get the flashing..., so

Second question: is it bad to leave it in 4x4 when switching off,
Third question: and does it disengage the 4x4 when turning off or is the light just flashing because it can't sense a vacuum when started but its actually still in 4x4?

I know that last question could be answered by jacking up and testing out but as i had other questions i figured i would add it in

Many thanks in advanced,

Tom,
1999 Suzuki Jimny 1.3 standard thoughtout for now

First question, no. On the lever transfer boxes the 4wd engages the hubs when the engine is running and you pull the lever to operate the switch on the transfer box. You are supposed to be able to do this when driving along at 60mph (provided you don't mind the thought of pieces coming off inside the hubs and transfer box) If there is no load on the system, like spinning a wheel at the back, it should go straight in, good practice to either be stationary, or dab the clutch though.

(Actually, the light is controlled by the level of vacuum, not the hub position, so even if the hub couldn't move, the light would still come on steady)

Second question, it won't hurt anything, the vacuum valves don't activate when the ignition is turned off, so you can leave it parked in 4wd and the handbrake holds the front wheels too.

Third question, it is most likely that there is no vacuum in the system, the flashing light happens if vacuum cannot be established in the pipes and hubs within 15 seconds. Probably normal, there is a tank to empty, and I expect the timer starts from ignition on, rather than when the engine actually starts.

I'd say that you have a vacuum leak somewhere, possibly a cracked rubber pipe, and straight ahead is closing the crack enough for it to work. Or you could have a shot wheelbearing that only seals when you are going straight.

The usual suggestion is to junk the vacuum system and fit manual hubs, I just made the vacuum system work on mine as it is more convenient.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
