Overheated Engine Damage... was created by BGBrit
Hi all, recently had a split top rad hose, now fitted a new one. However, it took some time to source and therefore I did a temp job on the hose and drove it around for a few weeks. In all the Jimny overheated four times due to the poor repair job I did.
I was checking the temp gauge all the time as was driving, and it would move from normal temp to red hot mark within minutes as it lost too much coolant, taking 20-25 minutes after switching off to cool down to normal. Topping up the coolant and affecting another repair would last another few days.
My question to all you experts out there is what negative effects has this done to the Jimny if any (2009 1,3 vvt) I read online I should change the oil as it might be burnt.
The engine temp gauge did stay in the very hot position for a good 20-25 minutes we are experiencing 30+ air temp in Bulgaria for the last month or so, perhaps the reason why the hose split.. The car seems to drive just the same I must add.
Cheers

Possible head gasket, but you checked the oil. Do an oil change and plugs. if the oil is nasty, then probs need a head gasket.
Buy a swift 1.6vvt engine instead, its an easy swap!

I've checked the oil and its fine. It is 10 month old with less than 3000 miles. But as a precaution I'll change now rather than leaving it till Oct. There is no sign of water in it or oil in the coolant, the coolant is new of course, I'll just keep an eye them both in case the head gasket does eventually leak. The main gripe is tossing the iridium spark plugs as they have only 8000 miles on them. But I guess they'll be fried. Replacing them with borsch 4 points that I kept just in case. I also plan to do a compression test but that will be later rather than sooner as I'll need to source one.
Cheers
Tony.

If the plugs look good on inspection I'd be inclined to leave those....with the new hose is it staying in the normal zone on temperature?
Modern oils are good but I think I'd change it just for my own peace of mind.

You can get the kits from eBay relatively cheaply that will check for exhaust gases in the coolant that would indicate a head gasket. Quick and easy test.
