I started off high and worked my way down ever since
gearbox rear seal was created by gilburton
Just had my 08 vvt manual in for a full service. No real problems apart from warped discs(again). On the service check sheet under advisories they noted "signs of oil at gearbox to t/f box prop shaft" and WORSE case scenario nearly £500 for the job inc new prop shaft although they did say it might just be the seal that needs replacing.They quoted the propshaft in case there is damage to the sliding bit that does the sealing.
Personally I think it's just because the car has been standing eg low mileage and green mildew in the window edges.
I've not had a chance to look yet but there is nothing on the ground and I'm sure if it was actually leaking they would have said so.
I have changed seals on bikes etc so if it's a straightforward " remove prop shaft, prise out the old seal,tap in new seal squarely etc. then it's no real problem for me to do or a cheap job at my non suzuki local garage.
Is it easy to change the seal and is it a Suzuki only part? any part numbers please,thanks

There was an older discussion regarding this ... can't find it though.
Short story: they want to replace the shaft because it can also be damaged if the seal was damaged. Normally though, this doesn't happen.
I've changed it and it's not easy, but not extremely difficult.
Part is 24780-83010 - 1 x rear gearbox seal if I remember correctly.

found a site that gave the size of the seal as 32 42 10 12.5 unfortunately after a quick search this doesn't seem to correspond to standard seal sizes so it looks like genuine only.
Any idea of the current price??

yes, I can get the genuine seal. Its a strange one with a double lip, I have not found anyone other than Suzuki doing them.

Seal ordered but while I'm waiting can someone give me an idea of what is involved replacing it?
Step by step haynes style if possible or a link?
I've still not had a chance to look because of the weather but is it a case of removing certain parts to gain access then, as I said before, dropping the prop prising out the seal and tapping back in or is it more involved???
Would it help stop oil coming out when the prop is removed if I raised the rear on ramps??
I've got to do it outside so if it's too involved I might just get my local garage to do it.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Keep an eye on the floor underneath it. You may find that the leak stops when you use the car, then you don't have to bother, I certainly wouldn't bother if it is just a weep, only if it makes a mess on the floor.
I suspect you need to remove the transfer box to do it, not a big job, but a bit of a pain.

If the transfer box does have to come out then I think the garage might get the job if it is really necessary to change the seal.

Still waiting to see if anyone can tell me what has to be removed to get the prop off?
I've had a look at the manual but I can't see anything about just removing no 1 prop shaft only removing the gearbox. This starts by removing the gear linkage. Is all this really necessary to just take the prop off??
I just want to assess if I have the kit to do it myself? I had a look for oil and there is a bit of accumulative oil on the crossmember which is not too serious but obviously I'd like to do it eventually.
Meanwhile a bit of oil on the chassis is no bad thing

undo 4 nuts remove bolts hit with a hammer till it moves slide prop off replace seals slide prop on line up bolt holes put in bolts in holes put nuts on end and tighten
