Unfortunately alot of boxes do know which way is up, the angle of the box will affect the internal lubrication system. You may be able to permanently tilt it up to 10 degrees without issue and some (np series boxes come to mind) can be flipped 180 but outside of this range it's definitely something that needs to be considered.Busta wrote:

-Flip the axles
-Move the fuel tank
-Reroute the exhaust
-Mod the tubular cross members to clear the drive shafts
Maybe some other stuff I've missed....
I'm going to fit an lt230 to mine (along with yota axles and auto box with a 250hp VAG 1.8t 20 valve up front)
Or mount the transfer box at the required angle, drill a new oil drain hole and bend the shift levers so they come up through the floor in the right place? Which would seem an easier option. It's just a box with some gears in. It doesn't know which way 'up' is.
It may be worth checking out but to do it with the lada box it would most likely require a large section of the trans tunnel to be extended underneath the drivers seat to clear the box.

I settled on modifying the standard Jimny transfer and inserting a locking diff in there.....got the spare transfer and as yet haven't had time to measure it up and see if I can do it....probably billet a new casing for the rear and make the locker...couple of bearings...who knows....it's on the list as the Swift sport turbo is going together over the winter and I "need" full time 4X4 then

You could attack the lt230 with a mill and reduce the weight of it.....Keithy wrote: I had a look at the lada transfer and figured it'd be too much work..

I hear the ashcroft atb is a very good bit of kit for them.

The early disco 2's had an electrically actuated center diff lock (same case still can be converted back to stick shift) that only engaged in 4lo.
The later diso 2's did away with the center diff lock mechanism altogether in favour of electronic traction control using the brakes.
Check out the thread on pirate4x4 "I blew up my lt230 at koh" some really good gen and very positive reviews on both the toughness and improved handling provided by the atb including one racing with it behind a 500hp ls v8
