Friday, Day off so planned a nice little route around north cumbria and set off.

Found a nice tight lane in Great Broughton. Only short but worth it...

Then onto another around the corner heading North out of Great Broughton...

Moved on to another off the A66 nearby...

And discovered that the drivers wheel still aint getting any drive :-(

So packed it in and headed home to investigate...

Turns out the Trail Gear/Longfield shaft is stripped on the diff end of the shaft. Looks like its not been engaging far enough into the side gears on the diff, as if its too short.

Side by side you can see its a fair bit sorter than the original shaft.

Does this mean I have the wrong shaft for my jimny (i.e. one for an SJ?), or are 2007 jimnys a wider track/axle than the earlier models?

Other side effect is that the axle casing is now very full of swarf, so i guess its take it all to bits (again) time :-(

Major pisser...It's way too short.....glad you weren't in the lakes when that popped out!

Just looks plain wrong to me.....no swarf in there....more like finings I reckon....odd ones get you like the sword of Damocles..

They do make a narrow track jimny, availible in other country's. Is it possible you were sent the wrong ones?. I'll have to check mine for length if i ever get round to fitting them.

It's been fettled just a tad.

Doh! it turns out i had forgotten to fit the C-clip onto the shaft before fitting to the CV, hence it moved in/out of the CV and did this :-( The shaft i have is the correct part number for my car according to trailgear.

Ironically, yes i was in the lakes with it like that. Dave got to use both his winches! only struggled a couple of times, so its impressive where you can get with just RWD.

The oil has lots of filings in it (glistens in a wworrying way), and theres some of them swords you mention kiethy. Got Russ having a look for a new shaft as this ones had it. CVs and passenger shaft seem ok at least. Bit worried about the diff side gears so might have that out whilst everything else is in bits to check and clean them.
