The illustration is of a drum brake system and the backing plate is an essential part of the system as just about everything is mounted onto it. If you are converting to a disc brake system, then the backing plate, as illustrated, is not required. A disc plate system fitted by the car makers will have a backing plate fitted but it is there purely as a dirt/dust shield. This shield will have a cut out to allow the fitting of the caliper.

Rodger putting the calipers back on the front axel today and was just thinking of taking off the backing plates, wondering would it really matter. In the past id get them dinged and they would rub on the disc, out with pliers, and pull them away from the disc and off you go again.

It depends whether or not there are vital parts attached to the backing plate. Items such as brackets for brake pipes or hoses will need replacing with specific items but generally it can be done.

In the past I have removed them from various vehicles and haven't noticed any detriment. But like Jack says they will have to be fairly stuffed before they come off Temeraire.

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

Left them on. Concentrated on getting new pads on and could get them to fit had to clean the bush /sliders, they got them to fit, just need to stick in the clutch which came with no thrust bearing
