Hi,

Money isn't an issue but it's finding people with the experience. There's no commercially available tried and tested turbos yet. There's a supercharger going through trials in the Netherlands at the moment but they've not concluded it's safe for the factory engine.

I'd estimate it weighs around 1.5T at the moment. About 300KG more than factory with no engine mods so far.

I know sweet nothing about complex engine mechanics unfortunately haha. Thanks for your reply and let me know your thoughts!

Regards

That's a very good question. Also with all the additional weight has it had a brake upgrade?

A little while ago I looked into doing what the Australian contingent know as a GVM upgrade, essentially to increase carrying and towing capacity on my gen3. I stopped almost as soon as I started. Disregarding the physical modifications needed forum a minute as they are simple, the legal requirements are an absolute mine field, I'd sooner cut my leg off with a rusty spoon. Then there's also the costs of getting the appropriate approval. And then you would have it to insure. The problem is though that if you don't do it properly then get found out the whole world will become full of pain and stress. What I'm getting at is its not possible to just keep bolting more and more stuff to your vehicle, there are all sorts of consequences.

So many of the problems in threads on here could be avoided if people remembered the old lady who swallowed a fly.....
The standard Jimny, with maybe a 2" lift and standard sized mud terrains is pretty well unstoppable, I only use mine for trialling and that's more than capable. I drive mine into water easily over the wheels with no snorkel and can't imagine anyone driving a £25k motor deep enough to require a snorkel.

Not sure weight is to much of an issue here. Most of the upgrades are replacements so some weight has come off with the removal of the original part before the new part is added. The winch bumper and winch is probably the biggest add on. Tyres will be a few kgs heavier than original.

I agree to a point. In fully armoured trim with the necessary daily tools Dreadnaught weighed 1180kg with an upper limit of 1420kg or 240kg of payload. I account for 130 of those which basically meant one passenger and a few tools or no passenger and some cargo. With Temeraire being an auto she is immediately at Dreadnaughts working weight without any armoured bits or daily tools so I will have to be really critical about what I add in order to maintain a reasonable cargo capacity.

I know that trialling is a very narrow specialism, but when you look at most sports and motorsports in general, not many people are adding weight. Large tyres are not great for steering especially, you sacrifice lock generally.
Often people will turn up to a trial after spending months building a truck, they've bolted every conceivable extra on to it and they spend most of the day running over all the canes and not getting round turns.
Winches and winch bumpers seem a bit mad to me, you drive in all weathers, submerge it in crap for three years, then you're amazed when it won't work. Helped to pull a van out of a ditch in the snow a couple of years ago, guy was already there with a 'lets off road!!' discovery, goes to pay out winch, comes out about 2m then gives up the ghost. Ends up using it as a tow rope, then winding it around the bumper as it would reel in. Always seemed more sensible to carry a mobile winch and have front and rear receivers on the vehicle, let's be honest you probably only need it about 1% of the time. The only problem with a detachable winch is no-one would know you had one.....

Any extra weight is an important issue, it just depends how much, so I second Keithy's question, what does it weigh? But even allowing for the extra weight, to go from 44mpg - my own Gen.4 - to 19 mpg is a disaster, and one that the extra weight cannot be held responsible for. If you have the original wheels/tyres or can borrow a set then refit them and try them for a week. The result might surprise you.

My suggestion has been covered byRoger,. You say not sure about regearing but essentially that is what has been done by adding such a large profile to the tyres .

Imagine a push bike with a fixed front sprocket , then add a large back sprocket, then see how much effort it takes to start the momentum going , then slow down again quickly because everyone else in front is slowing , then gain momentum again .
Adding weight isn't going to help either , but gearing to compensate is the only way ....or just get a set of standards and see the difference .
Every vehicle made is a compromise at the factory , this gives an even balance , but alter one thing at one end and it will affect the other end in equal proportion oppositely . So get is vehicle to climb a brick wall, you will lose the highway abilities .

I dispute the 300kg increase in weight but if it is correct the gross vehicle weight has been obtained without the driver or passengers. It would therefore be illegal to drive this vehicle on the road.

If it is 200kg overweight, then Lambert would be breaking the law and I would be on the limit.

At 100kg overweight you can have an average family of dad - 80kg - mom 60kg and two kids at say 60kg total and that's it, no luggage, no picnic and no dog (s).

Get it weighed, ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it.

Hi,
So the stock alloys and AT tyres from factory weigh 84lbs for all 5. 16.8lbs each.

5 X KMC17 Nomads = 129.5lbs
5 X BFG KM3 MT = 145lbs
All together 274lbs so an increase of 190lbs over factory wheels

ARB recovery bunker and EVOS8 winch with plasma rope and ARB recovery points weighs in around 120lbs. Stock bumper only weights 11lbs according to postage information on eBay, struggling to find actual specs.

Over all the weight increase is 140KG. So with me inside and the Mrs it's 140+48KG.

Car with no passengers weighs around 1275KG.
With us in it it weighs 1463KG.
