Gen4 option for 2WD Low Range? was created by Groenewald
Hi Guys,

I have checked the Wiki but there is not yet an entry for the Gen4 on this:

Has anyone installed a switch to enable 2WD Low Range on a Gen4?   I presume the switch will have to open/close the circuit that activates the vacuum locks on the front axles.

Why?

It will be handy to be able to do low speed manoeuvres using 2WD only without having to worry about windup.

If this is done, then the forward shaft will obviously be turning, but without actually driving the wheels - can this be an issue?

I can't offer a wiring solution but mechanically there will be no problem as the shafts will still be turning at the same speed as the wheels, they will just not be connected within the hub.

You just need to find the vacuum servo and wire it directly to a dash mounted switch. You then have independent control of the hubs.

Why would you want to use low range with 2wd?

My only guess would be heavy towing on the road?

I use 4x2 low a lot, it's great for manoeuvres with trailers, saves killing the clutch. It's also good for creeping about round the farm in the drier months when traction is abundant.

One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

The Gen4 transfer box is mechanical so as mentioned you should be able to break the circuit to the solenoids to stop them locking in with a switch

Come to think of it, l do sometimes use low range on the Defender while reversing or negotiating steep customers drives

So the ability to use the Jimny in 2wd low range would be more useful than l first thought.
