Hello guys... Been creeping for a while and today finally bought my 1st Jimny (2001). Had a drive in it before coming home everything seemed fine with it. Got home and my estate likes to operate a 52:1 speed bump to resident ratio. Almighty bang from the rear. The closest I can describe the noise would be if you had a bare boot with a panel of wood that was slamming down when you go over the bumps. I initially thought it was infact the piece of wood that was covering the tool hole. I even removed all the tools in the hope it was just that but nope. Noise still there, hopefuly its nothing to expensive as its really decent for its age.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for having me on the forum :D

It best if you can get someone to bounce in the back while you have a look.
But a few things to check for a starter:-
Towbar fitted? - rear silencer hitting towbar.
Exhaust hangers (rubber) failed or parts of system too close to bodywork.
Rear door rubber support missing or gone.
Shock absorber failing or shock mount.
Check all the bolts are tight.
Mike

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

I think you're on to something with the back box and exhaust hangers.

Mine had it for years.

Getting the exhaust professionally re hung sorted it out. By professionally I mean finding someone who cares rather than qwikfit.

While it could be exhaust related it is just as likely that the dampers themselves have died especially if they are original to the car, we had no end of problems with mother's old terios and that was dampers also towards the end of the life of the factory ones on Dreadnaught they were getting a bit bangey and new sorted things out.

Thanks guys I'll check it all out tonight. Do hope it's nothing major. It's such a loud and aggressive sound it's hard to believe it could just be a simple thing.

If it's really loud then it could be a broken spring

Maybe I under sold it. It's not a 'dave have a listen to this noise' it's a full on grit your teeth and brace for impact sort of sound. Deff not something you want to re create more than you need to.

I am 36 miles away in Kidsgrove if you are heading southeast.
The Jimny back end is a knock amplifier, so it's possible it's anything mentioned so far. It's usually an easy fix, it's a Jimny!

Put your foot on the exhaust tail pipe and move it about a fair amount to see if you can replicate it.

The back box is the tightest fitting part of the exhaust.
