Looks like the crown wheel bolts have loosened, rattled out, and been thrown into the gear’s teeth, that’ll be the bang you heard...

They should have been loctite’d in and torqued to spec’... who built the Diff.? :(

From the photos it looks like the ARB’s case / crown wheel carrier has a slight chew to it, but should still be okay...?

If it was me... I’d pop the “new / spare’ Diff you now have into the back axle and rebuild the axle and that will get you mobile again..

Clean and test the ARB with the airline from the compressor and check it still locks up alright...

Then get another rear Diff and combine that and your ARB at your leisure...

I’d use the existing axle casing as that’s already drilled for the air connection...the new crown wheel and pinion would then need building around the ARB, the copper feed pipe looks to be undamaged? So you just need either the confidence to strip and rebuild it yourself? Or a specialist garage / gearbox kind of place... I used a local Land Rover garage once that was used to off-road vehicles...

Thanks Dave,

Thats exactly the plan, use "your" diff straight into the JImny to keep us going so that we have it running for the two days of "Jimny only" weather we get each winter,

Get another 3.9 diff to act as a donor and have unpressured rebuild of the ARB diff over the winter, learning on the way. However yours was the only properly priced diff on ebay so will wait for another to come up. I dont believe in paying too much for 3.9 diffs.

James Priestly might have one, or look up a fella called Cliff Totney in Hamilton, nr Edinburgh who usually has loads of jimny parts and posts ;-)

I have a paper copy of the ARB installation instructions from mine if you need them (but are probably available online too). Not difficult things to install really.

J999 MNY, ULYSSES M18 VVT with ITB's Dyno tested at 130hp

Pickup/tipper, R7me gearbox & 6.4 Rocklobster, 31" Toyo MT, 2x ARB air locker 3.9 diffs in braced axles, 6" total lift, Floating rear conversion, Raptor painted, CB, Recaro's, Caged, etc, etc...

Thanks riccy,

I also have the instructions already.

What I am also looking at is the workshop manual for the Jimny and there is a lot about setting up the end float, shimming and the preload which concerns me

Most of that is to do with the pinion gear. If you have a good donor diff then there is no need to touch any of that.

Get the locker out and asses the damage first, but its probably OK and the shafts would have stopped any large parts entering the locker, meaning cleaning and maybe get it on a lathe to tidy up the outside gouge marks hopefully.

The locker setup you need to do is the backlash and bearing alignment. Not that difficult with some fairly cheap tools :-)

one of these for setting the backlash:
www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cm220-dial-test-indicator/

and a magnetic mount of some sort for it:
www.machinemart.co.uk/p/et113-125mm-mini-magnetic-stand/

plus a torque wrench is about all is needed other than standard tools and some marker paint :-)

Maybe add in a 1/4 NPT tap to drill & tap the casing of the new donor diff for the ARB airline, saves messing about with the pinion if thats good on the donor diff...
