Gearbox whine and woes!!!! '05 plate VVT

Hey guys,

So it seems like my Jimny is determined to collect the whole set of generic issues that could possibly affect Jimny's......

I think something is up with the gearbox, I have no mechanical knowledge and this would be a garage job.

Basically its got a really loud sort of whine, like the usual gearbox whine but much louder, it happens more when I'm going faster but the odd thing is it seems to stop when it has warmed up (or at least improve) and it also still whines whilst I am in neutral and also it still whines with the clutch down.

I took it to my mechanic and he couldn't figure it out, suggesting I contacted a specialist who may of seen it before.

The specialist instantly said bearings and then said that will be £600 job plus £175 for removing the box plus £100+ for a new clutch.

I nearly cried I don't have anywhere near that sort of money.

So, the next solution is try and find a second hand box and my mechanic will fit it for me.

Are these a nightmare to find and how do I know which box I need?

Someone please help!! This Jimny is the most expensive car I've ever bought and I love it but it's cost me a fooooorrrttuuuuuune this year what with an incurable death wobble and other woes and now this!!!

Thanks all.

Hope you can help.

Edd

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but a replacement gearbox will be at least as expensive as getting the old one fixed.

These boxes have known issues and the scrap parts market knows it, so they charge the earth for a second hand box of dubious origin. Watch out for "refurbished" boxes where all they have done is given it a coat of paint

I would look at a rebuild with you doing some of the work. For example my local gearbox specialist used to charge £350 for the box rebuild if you had already removed it from the car etc

Thank you!

Yes, my only worry is I don't know enough about it to know that it is definitely the gearbox causing the issue, I'd hate to spend so much money to find out its the clutch or the transfer box or something like that.

That company said it would be £600 if I removed it myself and then still plus clutch.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeh I think I noticed it being worse in 4th, at low speeds you can't really notice it in the first few gears as soon as you start going above 30-40mph ish and into the higher gears it does it. Its just weird it gets better when warm and if its gearbox would it still do it in neutral and with the clutch depressed? The clutch also feels a bit weird when I press it down when it makes the noise, kind of like gritty at a certain point with some vibration through the pedal I think.

Typically the rear prop starts to leak first at the gearbox end, so have a look at the prop joining the gearbox to transfer box.

If its all oily at the gearbox end then it is likely gearbox. If its all nice and dry then try getting a new clutch fitted first (that should be less than £200 all in) ;-)

If the transfer box is all oily, they are about £100-200 to replace 2nd hand and an easy diy job to fit.

Thank you!

I will check that out, are there any diagrams or anything showing me which bits are which? Sorry total newb.

Another question, if I get the clutch fitted new and then it turns out to be gearbox after all, can I keep that new clutch or do I then need to get another another new clutch? You know what I mean!?

And when it comes to gearbox, do I ask for bearings to be done or a gearbox rebuild, what's the difference in job/price?

Cheers!

The new clutch would be OK to re-use. A mechanic might be funny about it but it is new after all...

If you need to have the box rebuilt (best option in my opinion if it is that), you should ask for a complete new sealed bearing kit to be fitted, which I think is standard for gearboxes from 2009-10 onwards (if you are looking for a spare box). Others will know better, but that seems to be the common issue.

Worth looking up Sniper's posts on this forum, he mentioned rebuilding gearbox at a garage for a good price recently (£400?) ;-)

The clutch will not cause the whining you are suffering.

I think it's definitely a gearbox re-build to replace the bearings that these suffer with. Messing about with the clutch only is just costing you extra labour.

The only reason that the mechanic is saying to replace the clutch is that you always do when you take the gearbox off as it's so labour intensive to get that far that it would be silly not to do so, unless you know it's relatively new.

The last thing you want is to have to replace the clutch in 6 months and pay all that labour again!

Thank you!

Just making a few calls now to get some prices.

So a new complete sealed bearing kit (and clutch).

I'm only hesitating because I'm worried that if it's not the gearbox it's a whole lot of money if it still makes this noise. It must be though, although I can't see any leaking oil at propshaft end.

It can only be the gearbox though. The transfer box on those doesn't whine unless it's lost its oil as is the case with the rear diff and you have issues with gear changes.

It's crap but seems to be the problem.

I'm afraid that you bought a Jimny from a period that they suffered from this issue. Before 2005 and 2010 onwards are fine. Hindsight is no good to you now though.

That's alright mate, I appreciate the help.

Just got a quote near me in Exeter for £894, that's £500 bearing rebuild £150 box in and out and £144 for a clutch.

Looking at a post a few months back by sniper he paid £827 in sheffield so that doesn't seem to unreasonable?

Now to ask the god of credit card if he say yes.
