stuck in 4x4 on site HELPPPPPP!! PLEASE. was created by invincible
hello all, yesterday half way up whernside on a job the 4x4 light started flashing and she wont go back into 2wd. the switch on the dash 2wd one then broke, so i took the dash off took the switches apart to find a tiny yellow rubber hat not a spring in the micro switches. i swapped 4wd low switch to hopefully make the 2wd switch work. this hasnt worked, and seems stuck in 4x4, i have manual hubs so i unlocked em, but will she be ok to drive ? its just the front drive shaft will be engaged all the time right ? it wont do any damage will it? there is prob a 1000 threads but i have to get off to work again, any help much app guys.

ps m16 engine still not in grrrr!!!

If you have manual hubs you can switch them to 2x4 and all will be good to go.

It's fine to drive. Fuel consumption might be ever so slightly higher as theres a bit more drag on the drivetrain, you probably wouldn't notice it however

Yeah probably just yanked a wire by the transfer box. Bit of a pain to do but not impossible to get going easily.

Because the box is electrically controlled it has wires coming out fairly low down at the back that are not especially well protected from physical damage. It is not uncommon for these to catch and pull. Sometimes they will look intact other times they can be hanging off completely. Either way it's unlikely that you will have enough wire to put something like a butt connector on the broken wire against the plug, meaning a new plug is probably easier to do. Like I said a pig but not impossible to do.

Is it best practice to fit manual hubs...?
In case of this happening and your miles from home
I would be really worried about using 4 wheel drive when miles from home in case it got stuck like this

It depends on how you intend to use the vehicle and how you feel about risk. There is a degree of reliability inherent in a simple solution. But that only goes so far. It is also the thin edge of an increasingly slippery slope of what if modifications. You can have the most competent vehicle able to do just about anything and you can still come home on a recovery truck if you're unlucky.
