Transfer box was created by Basketcase
Hello guys the transfer box chain has started slipping now nice clunking noise when setting off..is it worth changing the chain and gears for new ones or just get a 2nd hand box and throw that on? It’s a 2000 reg jimny so obviously don’t want to spend hundreds on parts for it. Any opinions or anything greatly appreciated. Cheers

Unless you're looking to regear it I'd say just get another box.

It could do with better ratio but if the only ones are jimnybits then I won’t be spending that much on gearing

I went for a quick box replacement due to needing it back on the road. But I have kept the old box so I can put a new chain on it (as I suspect the chain on my replacement will probably go the same way!) If you can do it yourself, think a new chain would be cheaper.

If the only place you can get the chain from is jimny bits then definitely not...chain is£100 and it’d need new gears too I assume they are £300

Ah, I thought you could get away with the original gears.

I may be able to reuse the gears but by the sounds coming from it I highly doubt it...I also want to know where to get the parts from cheaper

Second hand transfer boxes change hands for about £100 so you'd be better to just get another if the one you've just bought goes south.

Some of the guys at work think it could be the rear diff that’s at fault not the transfer box...when I set off sharpish you get a long clunking noise which is why I thought it was the transfer chain but if you floor it and wheelspin the drivers wheel stops spinning when it starts to clunk but the passenger one still spins. Any offers on if that would just be how the diff is working or if it is knackered?
