Hi all. I have been doing maths. By my reckoning a standard Jimny in low first sends a maximum of 975 nm to the rear diff. My proposed engine and gearbox are going to send approximately 1012nm in the same direction. As it an automatic box even with a lockup clutch it's not going to be as brutal as a manual. Second I'm going to be running a smaller wheel and tyre combination to rein in the theoretical top speed which is going to see an 8pc drop in diameter.

Initially I was thinking of Toyota axles but I don't want it to look odd and I want to keep the weight off.

Will a Jimny axle cope? I know that stronger internals are available but are they really necessary?

It is less than 4% more, I can't see that being a problem.
The diff is a 4 pin, which is fairly strong, usually people twist the halfshafts and snap the short one, when they have very grippy tyres, before the diff bursts.

There has been some discussion on here about the auto box being at its limit with the standard engine, I'd be more worried about this..

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Ah no the box will come with the 1uzfe and drive straight to the diff so it's only the axle that is going to be struggling if at all.

What about the fact that the diff is offset? For narrow axles that can handle the power and have a diff in the right place look at older Volvos. Many of them have Dana axles.

Ok cheers. Thing is though a propshaft doesn't know or really care what angle it runs at so long as the mounting faces are parallel.

Going back to the original question, I would agree with Facade. Unless the rear axles are very close to the threshold of allowable stress, I doubt it will matter. If the rear axle should fail, you will have a choice to spend extra money then. Either HD axles, such as Trailgear, or a different rear axle.

Hope you plan to post some pictures of what you create.

I started out with nothing & still have most of it left

That is true to a degree, however the greater the angle, the greater the change in velocity through the props rotation (UJs don't turn 100% smoothly, hence the existence of CV joints). The straighter you can keep it the smoother it will drive and the longer it will last. Or get a shaft made up with CVs at both ends.

How strong is the back axle?... pretty strong! Mine's been abused at least once a month for the last four years with an ARB air locker in it and a 4.87:1 transfer box feeding 'power' to it...

Regularly go through bearings because of the big tyres and landscape, but no rear problems with the diff / axle :)
