Thing are getting a bit serious in the new engine installation project. I have actually started buying components, I must be mad!

Question. Is the ecu just an engine controller or does it get extra duty with things like srs airbags and abs? I'm fairly sure the abs is separate which is good as i would like to keep it but as I am going analogue with the new engine think carbs, electronic dizzy, an oil pressure light and a temperature guage I'm wondering what else can go in the bin as being undesirable weight? Think full rally car interior with the minimum of guages on a folded alloy plate type arrangement simple robust and fixed with nothing more than a Swiss army knife.

My ecu also makes the tea, and sometimes brings the jaffa cakes. ( other small orangy chocolate cakes are availiable)

It's been fettled just a tad.

It also interacts with the immobiliser so you would either need that all wired in or go for an after market ECU like megasquirt

After further information the initial plan has been modified slightly and while I still intend on the bare minimum of instruments I'm being forced into needing an ecu anyway so it may yet be that a fully bespoke system is employed instead of corruption of the existing. Bit disappointed to have to give up on carbs. Cheers Martin.

I was going to say, how are you going to get around the MOT emissions test running carbs? There's no chance of legitimately doing that on something as new as a Jimny. Throttle bodies with an aftermarket ECU is the way to do it and, cost aside, has many advantages over carbs. I don't know for fact, but I very much doubt the ECU would control the air bags. With an aftermarket ECU you should be able to ditch the standard ECU altogether.
What engine are you going for? Going this route there are lots to choose from!

ECU is paired to the immobilizer antenna but the key itself (its immo-chip) can be programmed to fit if it is from the same series. The ECU also does the diagnoses and you will get a heap of error codes if you use the wrong one. There are also differences in the programming between manual and auto gearboxes. There are signals coming from the ABS to the ECU, not sure if there is any the other way but there must be some kind of speed feedback i guess. On newer models there are also more interface between the ECU and the cluster, speedo and so on.
It's a maze..
or amaze..
not sure.
When i don't understand it, I just admire it. :)

1uzfe........

Don't expect anything quickly as I am having to amass the parts on a very limited budget and I need the car to remain usable for that duration. It is also going to be getting yota axles to give the rear end half a chance of taking the torque and the additional stability of the wider track. A Toyota Jimny or a Suzuki Land Cruiser if you will....

Very. But it will fit. The flying spanners and mad fabrication skills aren't the issue. It's getting the computers to play ball that is giving me the fear!

Have a look at speeduino Lambert, I just built a turbo manifold for the M series and it's going to be paired to one.... £155 for an assembled one....

I've gone Megasquirt 3 with a few upgrades for my supercharged SSS engine.
