Gearbox issue, 2007 manual was created by TheGingerWizard
Hi guys,

Bit of a weird one with the Jimny, im getting a heavy grinding followed by a loud clunk from the front then all is fine! It only happens when i first move off in the car and at slow speed, once its done it drives perfectly fine, no issues. It will stop if i reduce speed slightly or if i select 4wd and then go back to 2wd. All the 4wd system works fine, i have changed the gearbox oil but it doesnt seem to have made a difference.

Any ideas? I have had a search but cant find anything specific

Thanks in advance,

Matt

i had this with 215/75 tyres at one point when reversing around corners sometimes (was catching tyres on the front bumper),

otherwise i would start looking at the front vac hubs as that sound a likely culprit. This would be prevalent when using it in 2wd after a 4wd session.

finally the transfer box and diff are the next things to check over

A short but loud "machine gun" noise could be transfer chain slip. Try a hill start to see it it gets worse/more consistent

The front hubs OK? could they not be disengaging properly or not out enough and then catching again after a few miles

Sounds just like a chain slipping on a sprocket. Is the chain a changeable part or is a new transfer box required? Is it a big job? Im fairly handy with a set of spanners so would be doing it myself.

Many thanks,

Matt

Just to be sure you haven't got transmission wind up, try reversing on loose ground like gravel in 2wd letting the wheels slip. I had this happen once after driving in snow which wasn't slippery enough for 4x4.
