Don't be fooled by brands. At these very low prices it's all the same. Be it warn Tabor or superwinch tigershark.
What about a used Goodwinch TDS? Then you can get spare parts of anything should break. And the winch is of good and proven quality.
I'd avoid these hand winches. First time you use it you'll get so tired of it that you still end up buying an electric winch. So save some money and buy the right thing first time

I second the Goodwinch TDS, we have a couple of them and they work well, I would also advise against steel rope, it's very heavy and very few pay'n'play sites will allow you to use it as it incredibly dangerous should something fail, I would go with the green bow rope if you phone David at Goodwinch I'm sure he will do you a deal.

Goodwinch are currently offering an ATV tds 4000 mounted on their Bak Rak system (tow ball mounted) for £300.
If David at Goodwinch was prepared to swap the steel cable for a Dyneema , would anyone consider this a decent option? My reasoning behind this is "only-when-required " fitment, and could also be mounted on a front towball which I intend fitting anyway for moving my boat.
Constructive objections to this idea would be appreciated .
Gus .
Apologies for hijacking the OP's thread !!!!

That looks like a definite option Gus, now you've got me thinking I need to spend even more of my hard earned money on a towbar too!
As I'll mainly be using the winch to get out of places I shouldn't have gone in the first place (I'll be alone and up on grouse moors or boggy forestry tracks), a rear-mounted winch might be far more appropriate.

Just one thing worth taking into consideration.
There's nothing wrong with using a steel rope. It's still the choice for many applications, cranes, tow trucks, agriculture and such.
What's wrong with a steel rope is that many 4x4 users tend to forget proper maintenance and use of it. Like many other things, it also needs to be cleaned from time to time. Same as a synthetic rope.
So yes I understand why you want to use a synthetic rope, I use it myself. But don't think that just because you've put synth rope on you winch, you've discovered the holy grail of recovery.

Appreciate your thoughts, Tom....and having spent years in close contact with helicopter rescue winch (steel) cables, I have no objection to them in the least. ...my main concern was the weight differential .
Can I, therefore, assume that you concur with my idea, in principle ? ?
Cheers,
Gus.

Of course
But probably a good idea to have a snatchblock at hand with a 4000lbs winch
BTW.. What helicopter have have you worked on/with?

Were you in the RAF?
I've had my share of hours in the old Lynx, only as passenger though But now the Danish Navy is swapping the old Lynx helicopters for Seahawks. So a bit excited to see how that's gonna be like.

If you use steel you must also have a winch blanket. If it snaps the blanket will slow down the whip effect.
