Valve stem oil seals was created by joshjake233
Has anyone changed the valve stem oil seals on their Jimny.
Mines smoking on start up but its not the PCV valve.
Just wondering if its something i can do myself?
Its a 1998 model.

I have this problem on a 1999. Are the seals suitable for changing with the head on.

Not directly related to the Jimny engine, but I have been told that you can do it so long as you can hold the valve up. Reported methods are TDC the cylinder with string in the bore, or adapted plug to allow you to use compressed air to hold it closed.
Do they work?
I don't know, I have always opted to remove the head and give it a full service while it is off. This way my new seals are working with a decoked head, lapped valves and new head gasket. Its only a few more bolts once the cam / rocker is out of the way.
You could try and if it goes wrong you have a need to remove the head.

Yes it does work but you need to be at TDC for safety and you can finish up a dead end street because you now have to compress the valve spring to remove the collet and spring cap to get at the oil seal. Normal valve compressors push against the valve head to do this.

Thanks. I was thinking of using the rope trick but maybe it would be best to rake the head off. Since the engine is still going well except for the smoke on start up I was considering leaving well alone.

Sealey sell the bits to do the compressor air hold up and spring compressor tool that allows you to keep the head on.
Never used them, but had a search see what I could find.

It's a general purpose tool that may or may not work and either way it may or may not cause damage to adjacent parts. I have worked on engines all my practical life and I wouldn't touch one with the proverbial barge pole.
By the way, what colour is the smoke.

Smoke is blue on start up. It clears after a few seconds.
